Behind the black box of search: risk, Findability and discovery
The ability of organisations, governments and societies to mitigate, avoid, and learn to manage risks depends on having internal concepts in the relevant organisations' internal taxonomies that describe the risks. Without accurate concepts to describe risks, they will not be able to recognise and orchestrate effective responses to emerging risks. In this talk we will use the examples of HIV, cancer, and public transport failures (the SMRT breakdowns of 2011) to describe different kinds of taxonomy-related risk. Concepts are effectively invisible and un-addressable unless they surface in organisation-wide taxonomies. If the concepts are inaccurate then the solutions will not be appropriate to the risk. If the concept exists but cannot be used aggregate information within the organisation, then solutions cannot be mobilised to address risk. The speakers will discuss what it takes to be able to deliver a “beautiful” and effective search and discovery experience within the enterprise - where search and discovery enable a risk and opportunity responsive environment.
