ISO 30401: Knowledge Management systems - what does it mean for KM professionals and ORGANISATIONS implementing KM?
The release of the ISO 30401 standard for knowledge management systems in early November 2018 represents the culmination of two decades of painful efforts to reach consensus on a common, global, prescriptive KM standard. Those two decades have been full of controversy over the possibility and applicability of standards in KM, failed efforts and compromises. The achievement of this standard is a major milestone, but there are several questions about implementation still to address. In this talk, Patrick Lambe will describe the history of standards development in KM, unwrap the inner workings of the ISO 30401 standard and how it will apply to you, and open a discussion about how you can use the standard to advance knowledge management in your organizations. He will link it to ongoing work by CILIP in the United Kingdom to develop a professional chartership route for knowledge managers.
- Why are standards in KM contentious?
- Why did this one succeed?
- How does the new standard work?
- What does the standard require?
- How can the standard help?
- What are the standard's limitations?
