KNOWLEDGE management and internal comms: integration or partnership?
Knowledge management is sometimes located within internal communications functions in organisations. Internal comms is a key potential partner in a KM initiative. There are some similarities of interest between the two. But there are also key differences.
Internal comms tends to focus on coordination, current awareness, staff engagement, change management and information flows. There is also a clear link with support for collaboration. Knowledge management is also interested in those functions, but it can also need to focus on organisation learning processes, and on maintaining organisational memory.
How should KM practitioners work with internal comms to advance their goals? Where does it make sense to partner with internal comms, and where do we need to partner with other corporate functions such as HR and IT? In this session, Eileen Tan will share her experience in working as a regional KM and Communications specialist with a global non profit. She will share how she sees the synergies between the two roles, and some of the key differences, and she will give some tips on how best to work with internal comms from within a KM function.
