making knowledge visible to leadership: using knowledge dashboards to visualise and communicate knowledge resources at country fire authority australia
If you want your leadership teams to respect the value of the technical experts in your organisation, you will know that part of the difficulty comes in trying to measure and place value on that expertise. It's not that leadership doesn't value them, but faced with many stark financial and operational metrics, this intangible value is harder to quantify and so gets left out in strategy and planning talks. In this project Stuart French took an innovative approach to visualise those intangible assets (50,000+ of them in fact) so that agency management could make more informed decisions about where to invest their valuable time and budget.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) in Victoria, Australia is a very large, very distributed organisation of 50,000 volunteers distributed across the State of Victoria in Australia, one of the most fire-prone areas on earth. In such an expertise and experience dependent environment, where health and safety is paramount, it is essential to be able to assess and manage that expertise and experience. The challenge Stuart French faced was how do you do that in a huge and distributed organisation made up primarily of volunteers? In this case study Stuart describes how he identified proxy indicators for knowledge and tested and evaluated these indicators through a set of dashboards for the CFA.
