How can organisations benefit from open access research knowledge?
Open access is a set of principles and a range of practices through which research outputs are distributed online, free of cost or other access barriers. The Open Access movement has been gathering pace throughout the 2000s, counteracting the earlier trends in "locking up" research knowledge behind publisher's paywalls. But it's one thing for resources to be opened up. It's another thing to be able to discover them and to be able to pull together research knowledge and data from many different repositories. This is a classic knowledge organisation problem.
Now there is an expanding range of tools available to exploit these growing publicly available resources. University libraries are putting their research repositories online. Open Access journals are growing. Publicly funded research is now coming with requirements to make the underlying data as well as the research outputs publicly available. Organisations like Google Scholar and Google Books are pushing the boundaries of being able to search and access research literature. In this session, Aaron will give us an overview of the range of tools available for gaining access to these treasure troves of knowledge, including search engines, citation indexes, open abstracts, and research and literature mapping tools. This talk will be valuable for anyone working in corporate libraries, with specialised knowledge bases, or in any technical discipline where access to the latest research is necessary.
