ORGANISING HERITAGE KNOWLEDGE
Heritage knowledge is vitally important for national and cultural identity, sense of history and of belonging, and to interpret the past. It helps us to understand how to navigate the present and plan for the future. Historical and cultural knowledge is embodied in artefacts, persons, places, and documents, and it is curated by national institutions, archives, museums, research institutes, historians and art galleries. It poses special challenges and opportunities for knowledge organisation and knowledge management professionals. Knowledge organisation for cultural heritage is not simply about content, information, interfaces and metadata. It needs to help us tell stories with heritage pieces and connect those stories into a larger whole.
The "content" that holds or points to this knowledge can be embodied in documents, media files, collections of records, buildings, places, and artefacts. Oftentimes, the "heritage knowledge" can only be interpreted and understood by considering these content objects in their relationships to each other. There are special organising factors: they may be organised by location, by time, by their place in a narrative sequence, by significant personalities or significant historical events.
In this panel we bring together a panel of experts in managing heritage knowledge in Singapore to explore the following questions:.
