WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO TRANSFER EXPERTISE?
What is expertise? It doesn't help just to call it "tacit knowledge". There are many types of tacit knowledge, and many possible ways of dealing with it. To get a handle on how to transfer expertise (or accelerate the acquisition of expertise), we need to understand its mechanics. What makes an expert different from a novice? How do they read complex and challenging situations differently from others, what drives their decision making, and how do they make the key decisions that make them effective? In this talk, Gary Klein gives an overview of the elements of expertise, and describes a method called ShadowBox for capturing key elements of expertise into learning scenarios that can help others acquire new cognitive skills and make the mindset changes necessary for them to become more effective in their roles. He gave examples from his work with law enforcement, healthcare and social services.
