EFFECTIVE VIRTUAL MEETINGS and remote working
The COVID-19 crisis has put virtual conferencing into the forefront of the workplace, not to mention keeping "locked down" children in touch with their playmates, and reducing the sense of isolation of the elderly and vulnerable. But many people and organisations are unprepared for an effective use of the technology when trying to carry on collaborative work at a distance. When we interact remotely, particularly in large groups, we miss many of the visible cues that physical presence gives. It's easy to be disengaged. More preparation is needed. In this morning session, KM guru Dr Nancy Dixon will join us from the United States to share her experience on designing and facilitating successful virtual meetings, and her advice on how to design a meeting for successful engagement and outcomes. Nancy is a great believer in dialogue, so come prepared for a conversation around her insights!
We'll also hear from Matt Moore and James Dellow in Australia, on what needs to be done by organisations to cope in the short, medium and longer term, based on a recent report they issued looking at organisational preparedness for remote working: "Pandemic of Under-Preparedness: A Status Report on Digital Workplaces and the Organisational Response to COVID-19 in Australia".
We'll also hear from Matt Moore and James Dellow in Australia, on what needs to be done by organisations to cope in the short, medium and longer term, based on a recent report they issued looking at organisational preparedness for remote working: "Pandemic of Under-Preparedness: A Status Report on Digital Workplaces and the Organisational Response to COVID-19 in Australia".
Nancy Dixon
Dr Nancy Dixon is a world-renowned researcher and consultant working with clients to understand the impact of change initiatives they have employed, with a special interest in knowledge transfer and conversation design. She conducts qualitative studies using in-depth interviews and ethnographic tools. She is the author of eight books as well as over 50 articles that focus on how organizations learn. Her books include: Company Command: Unleashing the Power of the Army Profession (with Burgess, Allen, Kilner and Schweitzer) Common Knowledge: How Companies Thrive by Sharing What They Know (Harvard Business School Press) (recently selected as one of the top 100 business books) Perspectives on Dialogue (Center for Creative Leadership). Dr. Dixon’s consulting company conducts in-depth assessments of knowledge sharing efforts within organizations, e.g. how people are collaborating, sharing knowledge, and making use of lessons learned. She brings extensive research skills to her work from her years as a Professor of Administrative Sciences at The George Washington University in Washington DC. Recent studies include, Intellipedia, an intelligence Wiki, and A-Space, a Facebook implementation, both studies conducted for the Defense Intelligence Agency. These social media initiatives span the 16 intelligence communities and have had a positive impact on their ability to collaborate with each other. Dr. Dixon has a comprehensive knowledge of the Intelligence Community and has worked extensively in the Health Care Industry. Recent government clients include The Defense Intelligence Agency, US Army, The Agency for HealthCare Research and Quality, and The Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Corporate clients include, Raytheon, ConocoPhillips, Towers Perrin, Deloitte, British Petroleum, Haliburton and the American Medical Association. Dr. Dixon is a former tenured Professor of Administrative Sciences at The George Washington University, and served on The University of Texas Human Resource Development Graduate Faculty. Dr. Dixon serves as an Editorial Reviewer for the Human Resource Development Quarterly and as a Member of the Editorial Board for Management Learning and for Action Learning: Research & Practice. She is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Workplace Learning. She serves on the Advisory Panel for Battle Command Knowledge Systems. He has developed knowledge management strategies, implemented content management systems, facilitated communities, developed classroom and eLearning programs, and developed and written marketing programs for corporations, government agencies and non-profits. He has worked in knowledge and information management, learning, marketing, sales operations and communications with organisations such as PwC, IBM, Oracle and the Australian Securities and Investment Commission. Matt is a sessional lecturer and Industry Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney, and is former IT Strategy and Design Manager at Seven West Media in Sydney Australia. He is co-convenor of the Information Innovation @ UTS seminar series, and is a member of the Innovations in Knowledge Organisation Conference Advisory Board. James Dellow James Dellow is an Australian consultant specialising in digital workplace and knowledge management. He is passionate about changing the way the world gets work done using digital technology, and has spent much of the last decade specializing in human-centered IT solutions that help people connect, communicate and collaborate with each other. He is Director and Principal Consultant of Digital Workplace Company. His professional experience includes working in a variety of information and knowledge management roles and as a consultant with a wide range of government, professional and blue chip companies. As an accomplished author, speaker and commentator on technology issues he has been quoted in the mainstream media and has also appeared as an expert on business news television. James has also been a contributor to Clearbox Consulting’s SharePoint intranets in-a-box reports, has co-authored CMSWire’s The State of the Intranet Today survey report, and is a contributing author to CMSWire. |
